My Experience

OCBC Cycle is one of the most memorable voluntary work that I have ever done as this is the only voluntary work that is done during midnight. During the event, I was assigned to be stationed at a highway’s aid station where we have to distribute Ice Mountain mineral water and 100PLUS non-carbonated isotonic drinks to the participants and to warn cyclists on a U-turn for their own safety. For my first role, it was to alert cyclists about the upcoming U-turn they will be facing so that accident can be prevented. It was rather a fun role despite having to raise my voice loud enough so that the cyclists will be aware of the upcoming U-turn. Many of them actually replied with a “Thank you” and some even smiled just because of a simple reminder. This actually makes me feel that volunteering at such ungodly hour is worth it because of these small gestures by the participants. I have also witnessed a few cyclists tossing their used plastic bottles on the road just before and after the U-turn. It was difficult for anyone to retrieve the bottles back as there are cyclists passing by constantly. At the same time, I was also worried about the safety of the cyclists in cases where they will fall or lose their cycling pace due to the plastic bottles on the road. Thankfully, the event has security guards that is able to make fast movements and actions to retrieve the bottles back for the safety of the cyclists. From this experience, I have learnt that communication and teamwork is essential throughout the whole entire event as all volunteers and staff will have to communicate with one another regarding any accident observed and teamwork as the volunteers will have to set up the drinks station fast enough and replenish the drinks when the quantity drops in order to cater to the needs of the participants.
